Members elect volunteer board of directors, which sets credit union policy and direction. Banks are required to earn a profit for their owners, the stockholders. Bank decision-makers will cater to what's best for the stockholder. But in credit unions, the key questions is "What's best for the credit union owners and members?"
This "not for profit" philosophy means...
Higher dividends. We, your credit union, pass the savings on to you by paying higher dividends than banks on savings accounts.
Lower fees. Banks charge whatever fees they think the marker will bear, to make as much profit as they can. Credit Unions try to keep fees to a minimum, meaning lower or no service charges, lower or no ATM fees whenever possible and lower fees for things like overdrawn checks.
Happy owners. Credit unions rate highest in consumer satisfaction. Credit unions watch out for their members and often share ideas on how to manage money. It's people helping people. |
